Report - Section 6.11

6.11   What do riders need and want?

The majority of riders need safe roads combining with bridleways which together make a route or circuit which can be ridden within 2 hours, approx. 3-10 miles, depending on skill and time available22.

Major roads need safe crossings whilst mounted. Where these do not exist walkers, cyclists and horse-riders are cut off from continuing their routes.

Minor roads need traffic speed control so that weather and visibility round bends do not cause undue risk. Many country roads in Sussex have had verges removed thus increasing speeds with no escape routes for any users.

Bridleways need to be clearly waymarked, free of obstructions and rideable from the saddle. Inadequate surfaces are unwelcoming to any user.

22 Roadwork is essential as part of horse development; training young horses, fitness etc. Horses also need variety for challenge and well-being - repetition dulls responses!
